A New Chapter for the 18th & Vine Arts Festival Foundation: Celebrating Our Non-Profit Status and Future Goals

The 18th & Vine Arts Festival Foundation is excited to share monumental news with you—we have officially been approved as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization! This achievement is more than just a milestone; it is a reflection of our commitment to creating equitable opportunities for Black artists and amplifying their voices in Kansas City and beyond.

Our Mission: Empowering Black Artists

At the heart of the 18th & Vine Arts Festival Foundation is a simple but powerful mission: to celebrate, support, and uplift Black artists by providing the tools, resources, and platforms they need to succeed. We believe in nurturing the whole artist, addressing their creative, personal, and professional growth.

As a non-profit, we are now better positioned to expand our reach, deepen our impact, and foster a thriving arts ecosystem that prioritizes equity, creativity, and holistic well-being. Whether through advocacy, education, or artistic celebration, we are dedicated to ensuring that Black artists have every opportunity to thrive.

Our Programs and Impact

Here’s a closer look at the programs that define our work and serve as pillars of support for the artists we work with:

  • Annual Festival: The centerpiece of our work, the 18th & Vine Arts Festival is a three-day celebration of Black creativity, taking place in Kansas City’s historic 18th & Vine District. This festival showcases talent across music, visual arts, fashion, literature, digital media, and more. It’s a space where artists shine, attendees experience rich cultural narratives, and Black art is honored and celebrated.

  • Arts Conference: Our annual conference is a transformative gathering designed to equip artists with tools for professional and personal growth. Featuring workshops, panels, and networking opportunities, the conference brings cultural leaders, advocates, and creators together to tackle important issues such as financial literacy, mental health, and career development.

  • Artist Advocacy Program: Through this program, we connect artists to critical resources that help them sustain and expand their careers. From grant-writing assistance to legal support, affordable housing connections, and mental health resources, the Artist Advocacy Program is a cornerstone of our mission to address the challenges artists face.

  • Adopt an Artist Program: This exciting new initiative allows supporters to make a direct and lasting impact on an artist’s life. For just $10 a month, sponsors provide artists with essential tools, festival entry, and access to mentorship and advocacy resources. By participating, you help artists pursue their dreams and make their unique contributions to the cultural fabric of our community.

  • Artist Awards Program: Recognizing the exceptional talent of Black artists, this program provides public recognition and support to individuals who embody creativity and resilience. Winners are celebrated and receive opportunities to further showcase their work.

  • Artist-in-Residency Program: This residency offers artists dedicated time and space to explore their craft, develop new work, and engage with Kansas City’s vibrant cultural scene. From mentorship to networking opportunities, participants gain invaluable support for their creative endeavors.

What We’ve Accomplished So Far

Over the years, the 18th & Vine Arts Festival has blossomed into a premier cultural event, bringing together thousands of attendees and hundreds of artists from diverse disciplines. Our programs have empowered artists with new opportunities and helped the Kansas City community connect with the transformative power of Black art. From hosting powerful panels at our conferences to facilitating artist showcases that inspire, we have made significant strides in creating a platform where creativity thrives.

And now, with our 501(c)(3) status, we’re ready to do even more.

Looking Ahead: Goals for the Future

As we look to the future, we are committed to:

  • Expanding our programs to reach more artists and communities.

  • Growing the Adopt an Artist Program to provide consistent support to creatives in need.

  • Increasing partnerships with local and national organizations to bring additional resources to our artists.

  • Hosting larger and more inclusive events that further the cultural and economic growth of the 18th & Vine District.
